Finding the right builders can be challenging, as there are so many factors to consider. We approached other local known builders to look at our project: a double-storey side extension, a single-story side, and a loft conversion. We contacted Henry and arranged an appointment to discuss the project. From the very first meeting, he jumped straight to the top of our list from the selection of builders we had. He showed more interest, had a vision of the project, and most importantly, listened to what we wanted.

We decided to appointment Thumwood Construction to carryout the work.

Day 1, Henry and his team arrived, they were all introduced and cracked on with the start of the project. No matter what conditions the weather was, the team worked through this when suitable. They were on time every morning and kept us informed of what was happening. One luxury we didn’t have, is living somewhere else whilst the building work was going on. Henry and his team made all efforts to accommodate our needs so we could use the kitchen and parts of the house to live in comfortably.

As most projects, obstacles will appear, but the team of Thumwood Construction always found a solution, this was impressive.

The project is now complete and there are not enough words to explain how pleased we are.

The whole team are polite, friendly and hardworking. The carpentry work, plumbing, electrics, plastering and flooring, all outstanding work. Even all other vendors such as Tilers and kitchen worktops, completed to the highest level.

Henry and his team recently renovated our house and converted a lounge and study into an open-plan kitchen/dining room. This entailed knocking through some walls, altering ceiling heights installing a new kitchen.

We’re really happy with the outcome and process. Henry was honest and reliable at all times. My biggest fear was shooting over budget but Henry did what was requested to cost. The level of quality was excellent and we now have a kitchen/dining room that we’re proud of and enjoy using.

We needed to have more space due to circumstances within our family. We decided to have a loft conversion and started thinking about building contractors. We asked around for recommendations and a friend mentioned Thumwood Construction.

Henry came round to give us a quote and a quick explanation of how things will go should we decide to go ahead.

It didn’t take us long after Henry left to agree for Thumwood Construction to carry out our loft conversion.

From start to finish Henry kept us updated on the works and plans going ahead. Henry’s team were very polite, clean and very trustworthy as at times I had to leave them while doing school runs etc.

The team went out of their way to accommodate us and we felt very relaxed and secure in their hands.

Even to the point of poor Brad & Luke being asked hundreds of questions on a daily basis by the little ones.

We had two rooms and a bathroom in our loft. As well as two rooms knocked into one and en-suite added.

During the initial process of meeting with various builders and receiving quotes we were introduced to Henry by a family friend.

There was something about Henry that immediately put my wife and I at ease. He has a very calm manner and willingness to listen to all concerns. He also acknowledges that for most new clients this could be there first project and does not confuse you with acronyms or complex builders speak. The quote received was very competitive and in-depth, detailing the works to be carried out and allowances made. At no point did we feel we could not query the quote or how the works would be carried out.

From day one through to completion Henry’s team were on site on time and ready to start, they were always polite, courteous and approachable. Any question however simple it may have sounded was answered with detail or followed up once the information was made available.

All the trades introduced to the project were of high standard and again very approachable and friendly.

Henry was always contactable and would respond very quickly so we never felt detached, he would also be on site everyday checking in with his team and with us making sure we were kept up to speed on where we were.

We also felt comfortable during the final phases of the project when running through the last elements and the snag list. These were taken seriously and addressed promptly.

Thumwood Construction Review

When we first started requesting quotes for our extension, we did the usual and found builders on Checkatrade because that has worked well for us for other smaller trade related jobs. However, we also asked around and kept an eye out for other building projects going on around the area. It was after seeing Thumwood Construction signs on a few projects that we contacted Henry. Thumwood Construction appeared to be a popular builder.

When we met Henry our first impressions were very positive. His calmness and patience gave us confidence that here was a guy who would be up to the challenge of a fairly complex build. Henry answered our questions and gave examples of how he had dealt with the sort of issues we expected to face. He also arranged to show us a previous build similar to ours.

To any readers, it is very important to see previous work by the builder one is thinking about appointing. Another builder we were previously thinking about using didn’t meet with our satisfaction when we saw their previous project. Henry’s previous project was similar to ours and finished to a great standard. Our house had been built by a master builder and has a high-quality finish. We wanted someone who would be as good.

After discussing details and finalising the quote, we decided to proceed with Henry even though he wasn’t the cheapest. In fact, Henry’s quote was around the middle of all the quotes we received, but importantly it was realistic pricing. It was his calm manner and the quality of previous work that decided things for us.

Henry’s guys started the project in August and the first two weeks they worked while we were away. They moved many heavy plant pots from the patio and dug up and potted other plants and trees we wanted to keep. By the time we came back from holiday the pace of work was increasing.

The first thing we noticed is that Henry’s core team, Steve, Mark, Jed, Nathan, Luke and Lewis, are a super nice, great bunch of guys who take pride in their work. Nothing too big and nothing too small for them. They turned up everyday at 07:45 for the duration of the project. One often hears about builders starting a job and then disappearing for days. Henry was clear that wouldn’t happen, and he was true to his word.

As mentioned earlier, ours is a complex build with a few challenges. Henry worked with Building Controls to work out the best way to tackle the issues. There was a lot of structural work and it has been done methodically well.

It is worth noting that Henry knows quite a few suppliers. We recommend listening to him as his suppliers were often cheaper than those we found. An example of this are the rooflights: Henry saved us several hundred pounds with his supplier.

With a complex build the main issue is in the coordination of material and work. Henry managed this brilliantly, even scheduling work around the delivery of the kitchen, which was not in his control. We gave him a date when the kitchen would arrive, and Henry did the rest.

The kitchen was a big project all by itself. Our kitchen supplier didn’t deliver all the parts and we had to chase several times to get the outstanding bits delivered. Henry’s guys were brilliant and just got on with other stuff. Lewis even had to re-do some of his work to get the units to fit properly. Really good job there.

Henry uses subcontractors for parts of the work, but all his guys are great. Henry has obviously vetted them carefully and they all know their business and all are great people to work with. The build has taken the best part of 7 months and it’s great that it is complete and we can start using it. At the same time there is a bit of sadness that we won’t see the guys again because one builds a rapport with them because they’re here every day.

The end result: fantastic! Henry and his team have turned the architect’s vision into exciting reality. Where things weren’t clear on the drawings and we had leeway, Henry discussed options with us and made sure we were satisfied. The quality of the build has been remarked upon by several people who have seen it. The quality of the brick work and the rest of it matches that of the existing house. Also important is that Henry stuck to his quote. The final build cost more than the original quote, but that was because we changed a few things.

I suppose the final test is whether one would use the same builder again. Would we have chosen Thumwood Construction if we had to do the whole thing again, knowing what we know now? Yes, definitely. Would we recommend Thumwood Construction? Yes, most definitely.

Recently had Thumwood Construction in to do our large patio and some other building work. Henry and his team did an amazing job, we are so pleased with their work, they came when they said they would, worked extremely hard in all weather's and were a friendly bunch of professional guys. Thoroughly recommend this great company. We'll definitely use them again.
